Background of the Study
Blood transfusion is a critical component of healthcare, especially in cases of trauma, surgery, or anemia. However, the safety of blood transfusions is paramount to prevent complications such as transfusion reactions, infections, and errors in blood administration. Nurses play a central role in ensuring blood transfusion safety by verifying blood compatibility, monitoring patients during transfusion, and responding to adverse reactions. In Kaduna State, where healthcare challenges are compounded by resource limitations, the proper handling of blood transfusions is crucial to avoid life-threatening complications.
Inadequate training, poor infrastructure, and insufficient blood supply systems are persistent issues in Nigerian hospitals, including those in Kaduna State. Despite these challenges, nurses remain at the forefront of preventing transfusion-related risks. This study seeks to investigate the role of nurses in ensuring blood transfusion safety in Kaduna State, assessing their knowledge, practices, and the challenges they face in delivering safe transfusion care.
Statement of the Problem
While blood transfusions are commonly performed in hospitals across Kaduna State, the risk of errors and complications remains a concern. Nurses, as key players in the transfusion process, must be adequately trained to ensure that safety protocols are followed. However, there is limited research on the specific role of nurses in ensuring blood transfusion safety in Kaduna State. This study will assess nurses' involvement in transfusion safety, their knowledge of best practices, and the barriers that may hinder effective transfusion management.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in ensuring blood transfusion safety in Kaduna State.
2. To evaluate the knowledge and practices of nurses in blood transfusion safety in Kaduna State hospitals.
3. To identify the challenges nurses face in ensuring the safety of blood transfusions in Kaduna State.
Research Questions
1. What role do nurses play in ensuring blood transfusion safety in Kaduna State?
2. How well do nurses in Kaduna State understand and apply blood transfusion safety protocols?
3. What barriers do nurses face in ensuring the safety of blood transfusions in Kaduna State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Kaduna State play a critical role in ensuring blood transfusion safety.
2. Nurses in Kaduna State demonstrate a high level of knowledge and competence in blood transfusion safety.
3. Barriers such as inadequate training and insufficient resources reduce the effectiveness of nurses in ensuring blood transfusion safety in Kaduna State.
Definitions of Terms
• Blood Transfusion Safety: Measures taken to ensure that blood transfusions are performed correctly and without causing harm to the patient.
• Transfusion Reaction: Adverse effects that occur during or after a blood transfusion, such as fever, chills, or hemolysis.
• Nursing Practices: The actions or behaviors performed by nurses in delivering patient care, including technical procedures and patient monitoring.
